U4 IGCSE start
In U4 we begin the IGCSE program and go into the theory behind some of the work that was done before. We discuss the principles supporting the states of matter, atoms and their structure and ionic and covalent bonding. Following this we take a closer look at some aspects of the Periodic Table. We discuss how the periodic table is organised, and how this influences some general trends down groups and across periods. We then discuss Groups 1, 2 and 7 in more detail, supported by fun and illustrative demonstrations and class practicals. Finally we look at the reactivity of metals and non-metals and how they are ordered, again using experiments.
IGCSE CHEMISTRY IN GENERAL
L5 IGCSE
In L5 we look specifically at acid and alkalis and how they can be used to make salts. Building on this, we investigate techniques that are used to analyse qualitatively which salt is in a particular sample, learning about specific reactions and colour changes. These topics provide students with the opportunity to carry out a range of investigations. After a look at some more advanced details of ionic and covalent bonding we move on to “Chemistry in Society”. This section focuses on the techniques used to extract and purify some of the metals that are important in society, as well as to obtain some important non-metal chemicals. We then discuss crude oil and natural gas: how are they obtained, and how do we get some of the useful products from them? We finish the year by looking more quantitatively at reactions: how fast do they happen and which factors can influence this?
U5 IGCSE
In U5 we investigate how to use calculations in Chemistry in order to work out how much reactant is needed, or how much product might be expected. Also, based on experimental results we learn to calculate the empirical and molecular formulae of compounds. Lastly chemical equations are revisited and balancing them is taught.
Chemical reactions give off or require energy; we look at these changes and why they are important. Rates of reaction are revisited in more detail, leading into the concept of equilibria - reactions that can proceed either way, depending on the conditions. The year is finished with another look at the manufacture of chemicals and preparation for the IGCSE examination.
