U3 Chemistry
In U3 we start the year with a discussion on chemical safety. Topics following that include:
• States of matter and kinetic theory
• Solutions and solubility in water
• Separations: solid/liquid and liquid/liquid
• Purity of a substance
• Chemical vs. physical changes
L4 Chemistry
In L4 we discuss properties of substances, separating these into elements, mixtures and compounds. We then move on to acids and alkalis. Then we step back and discuss how scientific theories are developed, using examples from history to explain the process. The students do presentations on one particular theory to demonstrate their understanding. This section leads into reactions of and with oxygen and their importance in society. Lastly, we discuss fossil fuels and crude oil in particular.
