Overview
An outstanding strength of the school. Individual care and support are provided by the House system which is complementary to the boarding system. Every facet of school life reflects that pupils are cared for as individuals.
Tutors and Housemistresses alike look after their girls' welfare in a sensitive and professional manner, never mollycoddling but preparing them for the future and nurturing their development in a stimulating environment.
Chapel
Chapel is central to the life of St. Catherine’s and, paradoxically, it is also a ‘space apart’. Every girl comes to Chapel once during the week for about twenty minutes and boarders also gather on Wednesday evenings for a time of worship. Special services are held too, and every year each house in the Senior School has its own House Communion. Leavers’ Communion in May is a very special occasion for the Upper Sixth.
Occasional vigils are held in Chapel when girls and staff will come and be still, light a candle for such Haiti or the victims of the Tsunami, and remains a place for private prayer.
Chapel is much valued and Old girls remember it with great affection and gratitude. It is a ‘sacred space’ where quiet, calm, peace and a sense of infinite goodness can be found.
Each year the School Chaplin arranges for all those girls who wish to be confirmed to attend ten preparation sessions. These weekly classes are from November through to March. There is no age limit and usually girls come from Upper Threes to Upper Sixths and sometimes a member of staff is confirmed as well. The confirmation takes place in the School Chapel in the Spring Term and the Confirming Bishop is either the Bishop of Guildford or the Bishop of Dorking.
