Art and design is a subject which enjoys increasing recognition and value within the curriculum. The subject is becoming ever broader and more flexible, with a wide range of disciplines practised in all year groups, including drawing and painting, ceramics and other three-dimensional work, printmaking, mixed media and photography. Full rein is given to creativity in every possible dimension, with experimentation and personal development of ideas an increasingly essential requirement. An awareness and appreciation of the history of art and world cultures, together with its influence on a student’s own artistic development, now features as a crucial aspect of the subject; senior artists in particular will often base an entire unit's work on a visit to a gallery or exhibition.
The John Palmer Centre is a purpose built building, opened in 1996, and is light and airy with a very different atmosphere from the classroom, which encourages freedom of expression in the individual. There is usually a hive of activity, often extending to after school clubs in art, pottery and photography, all of which run on a weekly basis.
