The Senior School Library houses a collection of over 13,000 titles supporting teaching and learning across the curriculum from Upper 3 through to Sixth Form. The Library supports an extensive subscription list of magazines. The library also subscribe to the daily papers including 3 foreign language newspapers. These are distributed throughout the school. A complete listing is available from the submenu. The library also subscribes to an impressive list of online services. Access to these services is meant for the pupils and staff of St Catherines. The links together with usernames and passwords are published on the Community website which is password protected. The list includes two general encyclopedias as well as more subject specific databases supporting particular curriculum areas.
Opening Hours
The Library is open seven days a week from 8.00 am - 9.00 pm. It is staffed by the Senior School Librarian from 8.30 am - 4.30 pm Monday to Friday and at other times by the teaching and boarding staff. The library is available to day pupils after school for quiet study and homework. At all times pupils are expected to observe the published Library Code of Conduct when using the facility.
Loans System
The Library operates two separate borrowing systems. During the manned opening hours there is a computerized loans system in operation. Pupils and staff are allowed to borrow a maximum of 6 books for a period of 3 weeks. Books may be renewed once, after which they must be returned to the library. Books can be renewed or requested online by logging into the Oliver Library Catalogue. From within school access is via the icon on every computer desktop. From home access to Oliver is via the front page of the library website. All pupils and staff are issued with a username which is written on the backs of their borrower tickets filed on the librarian's desk. Logging for the first time, this number is both the username and password. The system will then ask you to create a new password. After hours borrowing is operated with a manual system. All staff and pupils are also issued with three tickets which are held at the desk. Every book has a book ticket, usually inside the back cover. To borrow a book manually the book ticket must be removed from the book and married with one of the borrower's tickets and left in the issue tray on the Librarian's desk. The Librarian operates a strict overdue procedure recalling books not returned within the allotted 3 week loan period. Pupils and staff receive two email reminders but thereafter are billed for the replacement cost including an administration fee. Further borrowing is suspended until the situation is satisfactorily resolved.
Library Network and Catalogue
Access to the Oliver Library Catalogue is available on every computer in school. It displays as a specific icon on the desktop. From home, access is via the welcome page of the library website. The catalogue allows the user to search by Author, Title, Keyword, Subject, Class Number, Series and Publisher. Borrowes can also log onto the catalogue to view their current loans, renew or request books.
Photocopying
There is a photocopier available in the library for public use. Students are required to buy a £5.00 photocopy card from the librarian to make use of the machine. One photocopy card allows 120 photocopies.
