MBE Honour for David Goldsmith
Outgoing Association Prefects Becca Green and Henny Slater interviewed David Goldsmith for Non Nobis:
On 4th March 2008, Mr Goldsmith (maths teacher at St Catherine’s) was awarded an MBE for his inspirational teaching over the past 60 years. We met up with him to discover more about his experiences as a teacher.
Despite the many years that Mr Goldsmith has already been teaching, he has no intention of retiring for a third time as he ‘loves teaching’. He is particularly enjoying his placement at St Catherine’s, and has not noticed many differences between teaching girls and boys, apart from that girls seem to work harder and have a ‘notebook mentality’ compared to boys who ‘discover things for themselves’.
Mr Goldsmith regards St Catherine’s very highly with a particular mention to the ‘lovely atmosphere’. Since he started teaching in 1948, he has taught Mathematics at many independent schools, including Hurstpierpoint, Radley, Cranleigh, Lord Wandsworth and was headmaster at Crownthorpe School in Hastings. He particularly enjoys teaching A level students and has been examining for Oxbridge for 15 years.
During our interview, Mr Goldsmith was delighted to tell us about his experience collecting the MBE. It was a very exciting event for him, where he was accompanied by his wife and his three sons. Her Majesty the Queen presented this prestigious award to him, an occasion that he will always remember.
We thoroughly enjoyed interviewing him, and we hope that he continues to teach for many more years to come.

St Catherine’s Rocks!
Two bands from St Catherine’s, “Coven of Jack” and an unnamed band, performed at a FLY (For Local Youth) Gig Night at Cranleigh Arts Centre. They played alongside professionally signed bands and also the winners of the national competition for the best “Live and Unsigned Band 2007”. The audience were very appreciative of our bands judging by the volume of applause and the girls were delighted to learn that they are the first ever all girl bands to play at one of these evenings. Thanks go to Ian Young, Head of Contemporary Music at St Catherine’s who supplied the sound system for the whole event.
