Once again, the unlimited seating at Dunsfold aerodrome allowed us to invite all Association members to Prizegiving on July 8th, and to return to the School for Open Day afterwards.
John Hall, Chairman of the PTA, began the proceedings, followed by Stuart Sexton, Chairman of Governors, who gave the introductory speech. This year, Headmistress Alice Phillips was joined on the podium by Kathy Jefferies, Head of the Preparatory School for a joint presentation.

This inspirational presentation set out their joint hopes and aspirations for the St Catherine’s of the future, and was the basis of the document ‘A Vision for the Future’ which was recently mailed to all Association Members. We are most grateful to those who have taken the time to contact us with their comments. The school has responded to all of these, and we were pleased to note that they were overwhelmingly supportive.

Alexandra Blair, Guest Speaker

Mrs Phillips welcomed as the special guest Ms Alexandra Blair, The Times Education Correspondent. Ms Blair congratulated all the prizewinners, and looked back to one prizegiving of her own schooldays at which Bob Reid, then Chairman of British Rail was guest speaker. ‘I do remember’ she said, ‘that he had just one arm and that he said his disability never held him back. That whatever we did, we must seize every opportunity, be confident in ourselves and follow our dreams’. Ms Blair reminded the pupils that at ‘one of the highest achieving schools in Britain, you are very lucky.’ She encouraged all pupils to grasp every opportunity - ‘when you are asked to help organise a charity ball or ride bareback across Siberia, grab it with both hands as it will pay in the long run’.

This year, members of the Association Office and Governing Body were available in the Conference Room with various items of interest from the School archives on display. Although the beautiful weather kept people outside for most of the day, there were a number of people who enjoyed a visit there.
