Enjoying the Rose Garden
Founded in 1896, the Peckham Settlement is a multi-purpose community centre. It is a welcoming, versatile and thriving centre which is a hive of multi-racial social, educational and leisure activities. It is used to enrich the lives and develop the self-confidence and potential of the community and its individuals. St Catherine’s School has long been supporting the Peckham Settlement. There is a record in the School Magazine of 1935 of a visit to the school from 40 under-privileged children, who spent the day enjoying various sporting and musical activities and a good lunch here. One of the Sixth Formers who had helped on the day wrote: ‘Above the busy hum of humanity, came the sweet strains of five-finger exercises issuing forth from that venerable instrument known as the pianoforte. On our games field, scenes of physical activities predominated, while in the hall of physical culture, (i.e. the Gym), food rapidly disappeared.’

We continue to foster our link with the Peckham Settlement, and a group of their Seniors spent a happy Saturday at St Catherine’s on September 16th. They enjoyed a delicious lunch, a visit to the annual school Jumble Sale and a peaceful interlude in the Rose Garden, before wandering back to the dining hall for tea and a ‘Sing Song’.

This fun day would not have been possible without the help of former members of staff Beth MacCulloch and Rosemary O’Brien, and old girl Wendy Buer (1954). Their unstinting support of the St Catherine’s Association is much appreciated. Sara, Beth and Wendy are looking forward to visiting the settlement later this year.
