Rosamond Raymond Travel Bursary 2005
Anneke Alves, Sophie Corthine and Alice Seymour in Tenerife

Last summer we took the opportunity to travel to Tenerife to volunteer for the Atlantic Whale Foundation.

The charity is based on the island and aims to promote the importance of conservation of the marine life to locals and tourists. It also collects data in the area to monitor breeding patterns and behaviour of the dolphins and whales. During our stay we went out three times a day on the tourist boats to record information about the different species and also to educate the tourists about the wildlife. Whilst out on the boats we were able to take a break and enjoy swimming and snorkeilng in the clear blue sea of the Canary Islands.
We stayed in Los Gigantes where we shared an apartment with 10 other volunteers. At the weekends we were given the freedom to take in the local culture and enjoy the sun. One of our many weekend activities included scuba diving which was an enlightening experience. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and have kept in touch with many of our fellow volunteers.

We would recommend this to anyone with a love for Biology and a desire to improve their Spanish. We were very grateful for the financial contribution from the Rosamond Raymond Travel Bursary.
