On Thursday 13th March the Headmistress and others from school travelled to Christ Church, Oxford for a Reunion Dinner. Many of those attending had battled through rain and traffic to join us but the travails of the journey were soon forgotten as Old Girls and former staff living in Oxfordshire together with Old Girl graduates of Oxford University gathered to celebrate our common bond with St Catherine’s.
Christ Church is one of the largest colleges in the University of Oxford and, at the same time, the Cathedral Church for the Diocese of Oxford. Seating had been reserved for our party in the 12th century Cathedral, home to a world famous Cathedral Choir, and we were fortunate enough to experience the solemnity and beauty of a full sung Eucharist for Lent. There was an unexpected double reunion for Mrs Phillips who was delighted to recognise one of her Cambridge contemporaries, Canon Professor Sarah Foot (Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History) assisting at the Eucharist!
Twenty of us met for a champagne reception and three course dinner in the McKenna Room and the evening was characterized by plenty of laughter and happy reminiscences of days at St Cats. Mrs Phillips led a lively question and answer session over coffee when Old Girls shared their memories and current staff were able to discuss how the school compares today.
Messages received after the event indicate that the evening was greatly enjoyed by those who attended. Many find it difficult to attend Reunions at school and had also enjoyed the experience of dining in an Oxford college with which they were not familiar. We selected Christ Church for this event because a number of Old Girls have worked and studied at the college (two of them attended) but we hope to repeat the event some time in the future at another Oxford or Cambridge college with a St Catherine’s connection.
