Pastoral Care

Overview

An outstanding strength of the school. Individual care and support are provided by the House system which is  complementary to the boarding system. Every facet of school life reflects that pupils are cared for as individuals.

Tutors and Housemistresses alike look after their girls' welfare in a sensitive and professional manner, never mollycoddling but preparing them for the future and nurturing their development in a stimulating environment.

Chapel

Chapel is central to the life of St. Catherine’s and, paradoxically, it is also a ‘space apart’.  Every girl comes to Chapel once during the week for about twenty minutes and boarders also gather on Wednesday evenings for a time of worship.  Special services are held too, and every year each house in the Senior School has its own House Communion.  Leavers’ Communion in May is a very special occasion for the Upper Sixth.

Occasional vigils are held in Chapel when girls and staff will come and be still, light a candle for such Haiti or the victims of the Tsunami, and remains a place for private prayer.

Chapel is much valued and Old girls remember it with great affection and gratitude. It is a ‘sacred space’ where quiet, calm, peace and a sense of infinite goodness can be found.

Each year the School Chaplain arranges for all those girls who wish to be confirmed to attend preparation sessions.  These weekly classes are from November through to March.  There is no set age for this, and girls from Upper Three to Upper Six are welcome.  The confirmation takes place in the School Chapel in the Spring Term and the Confirming Bishop is either the Bishop of Guildford or the Bishop of Dorking.

Confirmation Service - Sunday 10th March 2019

Over the years many St Cat’s girls have been confirmed in St Catherine’s chapel – where appropriate baptised as well.  The Confirmation service led by the Bishop of Dorking will take place here on Sunday March 10th 2019 at 5pm.

We are offering your daughter the opportunity to own the Christian faith for herself at this service.  As part of the preparation for this special occasion there are seven compulsory sessions led by the School Chaplain, where we will explore the Christian faith and what confirmation entails.  These meetings will happen on Thursdays in Brontë common room from 6:30-7:30 with supper provided on the following dates:

  • 15th November
  • 22nd November
  • 29th November
  • 24th January
  • 31st January
  • 28th February
  • 7th March.

If your daughter would like to be confirmed next March, please can she fill in the Confirmation form outside the chapel and return it to myself by Friday 2nd November 2018.  Alternatively you can download the form from and return it to me via email by that date.  If you have any queries as parents, please do contact me at benji.mcnairscott@stcatherines.info .
