From the Headmistress 10th July

Dear Parents
Open Day was the perfect way for us all to reflect over the accomplishments of our girls this year and it was a pleasure to be able to welcome you all. When visiting the classrooms the multitude of work on display was a testament to both staff and girls. Likewise we were entertained by an extremely high standard of musical and choral performances from the girls supported by the Music Department. It was a pleasure to see parents taking part in the maypole dancing with their daughters, proving that it is more difficult than it looks! I do hope that you enjoyed the morning and agree that the girls and staff here at St Catherine’s Prep. have had an extremely busy year indeed.
Our own LIII Production ‘The Magic Tree’ proved to be a most entertaining evening and I was pleased that so many parents could join us on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Mrs Hodgkiss, Mrs White and Mrs Thomas, together with a team of willing helpers, worked tirelessly to ensure that the girls put on excellent performances.

The vibrant musical numbers, the elaborate make-up and excellent costumes transported us all into the world of trolls, witches and wizards in their underworld. Mrs Berry has kindly created a special page on the community website called LIII Parents containing photographs of the girls performing.
I am very pleased to have had the chance to thank our Bibliocat library volunteers last week over a cup of tea for their unstinting hard work in creating a wonderful environment enabling the girls to explore the world of books and reading. Behind the scenes this army of people, under the expert guidance of the Library Co-ordinator, who give up their free time, have enabled this facility to grow. If anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer then please do contact he Library Co-ordinator via the school office.
On Monday the UII and LIII girls held a Beach Disco in the Hall and although we were lacking the sun and sand, it was a fun evening and gave us a taste of the holiday season soon to come.

I am sure that parents, girls and staff would want to join me in thanking the Chair of the PTA for the last two years, for her drive, energy and loyalty to the School. She has introduced several new initiatives - photography class, wreath making classes; rambles and has overseen the development of our outdoor garden. We wish her family well in their move to Copenhagen. We are fortunate that a replacement has kindly agreed to take over the role of PTA Chair for next year. I would like to thank all Form Reps and Second Hand Shop Co-ordinators who are stepping down this year for their commitment and support. It is much appreciated.
On Saturday the Senior School held their annual Speech Day and the weather was, once again, very kind to us as we sat inside the marquee. A copy of the speech given by myself and Mrs Phillips can be found on the school’s website. The School is about to embark on a major but hugely exciting programme of development, that will benefit all girls in school, and we very much hope that you will support us in our vision for the future of St Catherine’s.
I wish you all a wonderful summer holiday.
Yours sincerely
Kathleen Jefferies
