Music News Summer Term 2008
ASSOCIATED BOARD EXAM RESULTS
These are not back yet, but will be posted out to you when they arrive.
HARP ENSEMBLE
For anyone holidaying in the South of France this summer, Rosie will be playing in the International Harp Ensemble at a concert of classical, traditional and popular music in Albi Cathedral, nr Toulouse on Tuesday 12th August at 8.30pm. It would be lovely to see you if you are in the area!
OPEN DAY
Well done to everyone for a successful term of very hard work. You all performed your best on Open Day and I and Miss Peters were very proud of you. I hope you all have a happy and restful holiday.
MUSIC LESSONS FOR NEXT TERM
The allocation of teachers is nearly ready and a copy will be posted on the music board when complete. Girls will be given the date and time of their first music lesson next term in the first couple of days of term. Music lessons will not start until Thursday 11th September. All girls currently taking lessons will continue with the teachers they already have unless their teacher is leaving at the end of this term.

I should like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Bonello for all her wonderful work with our pianists. She has been an outstanding teacher and will be missed by all of us! She now wishes to concentrate on achieving her PHD next year. My thanks also go to Mr Matthews, who is moving to Scotland to pursue a PGCE in Music, Miss Black who is studying for a PHD and Miss Farrow who is doing more professional piano playing. I wish them every success with their chosen careers.

13th June's News
The Associated Board exam timetable will be displayed from Friday. Most of the instrumental exams will take place on Monday 23rd June. Please check the board carefully and ensure that girls are ready at the time stated on the red sofa. REMEMBER TO KEEP PRACTISING HARD FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS.

We look forward to welcoming PPIII parents to a Strings Concert by the girls on TUESDAY 24th June at 2.45pm.

Please note a change in collection time on THURSDAY 26TH JUNE. The rehearsal for Strings and Wind will end at 4.30pm.

There will be no extra-curricular rehearsals during the week of 30th June or 7th July.

The following groups will be performing on Open Day, Saturday June 28th between 9.30am - 11.00am. Please make sure you are available during these times.

Wind Band, Lower II Recorders, String Orchestra, Mrs Williams’ String Quartet, Cello Octet, Training Choir, Major Choir.
FREE TRIAL INSTRUMENT LESSONS
Following on from a series of workshops to Form I in woodwind, brass and double bass, free trial lessons for up to a term are available on the bassoon, trombone, French horn, or double bass.

This offer is open to any girl in Form I and above. Please do consider taking up one of these less usual instruments and come and talk to Mrs White.
SHALFORD LADIES CLUB CONCERT
Fifty girls went to Shalford Village Hall on Tuesday lunchtime to entertain the elderly guests of the Shalford Ladies Club. The concert started with Louisa, LIII, playing the saxophone, followed by a quartet of violinists who played a piece by Telemann. Megan, Lois, Ailsa and Mei-Yin (all LIII girls) then performed on the bassoon, French horn, cello and violin respectively. Major Choir ended the concert with four songs that were fun, thought-provoking or rousing! The elderly guests were charmed, not only by the youthful exuberance of the girls, but also by their maturity and excellence on their solo instruments.
I would like to say a huge thank-you, not only to the girls, for taking everything on board, with equanimity and humour, but to the many members of staff who assisted in the organisation of getting the girls to Shalford (and we suffered a little from kangaroo-hopping minibuses to flat tyres and a visit to a pub for directions…be reassured, your girls’ safety was never comprised!), and to those who helped back at school covering lessons, arranging repairs etc. It was an eventful time, but a most rewarding experience for the girls and their audience.
ASSOCIATED BOARD EXAMS
Well done everyone who performed in June. The results will not be known for about three weeks, but you will be informed as soon as they arrive.
CONGRATULATIONS
Many congratulations to Rosie, UII, who took part in the recent Redhill and Reigate Festival and received a First place medal in the Grade 4 & 5 Harp category and won the overall harp Trophy.
Well done Rosie for this great achievement.
CHAMBER CONCERT
Over 50 performances, nearly 60 performers, nearly 2 hours of music. Congratulations on a splendid evening of music-making. The evening was a celebration of the girls’ individual efforts on their musical instruments and gave a new opportunity to some who did not take part last term, or another opportunity to others to perform different repertoire or on a different instrument. I know many girls were disappointed not to be a part of the concert, but I had to respect the closing date, otherwise the concert would have been 3 hours long and everyone would have gone home not wanting more! There are plenty of assembly slots to fill up in the second half of term, and there will also be a series of class concerts soon after half-term. So, keep up the practice!
PRE-PREP III STRINGS
Please encourage your daughters to continue with REGULAR practice. Few of their practice sheets have been filled in since the beginning of term and they are beginning to make excellent progress in their lessons. Details of the PPIII Strings Concert after half-term will follow shortly. The date for your diary is Tuesday June 24th at 2.45pm.
