For the benefit of new parents, a few words about Culture Vultures and the way it works. This is not an exclusive, members only society! After-school trips to art exhibitions, opera, ballet, theatre, etc, are arranged periodically, usually between two and four trips a term, to which anyone is eligible to go from U3 to U6. We are always happy to include parents as well if we need to make up the numbers.
Posters with details of proposed outings are displayed on the Culture Vultures board (at the foot of the stairs just inside School Block) and if your daughter is interested in going she signs her name on the list and takes a letter from the envelope with all the details about it for you to check over and sign the consent form. Once I have received this her place is secure on the trip. There is always a deadline date for the return of these consent slips, so it is important that all this is attended to as quickly as possible. This deadline is usually when confirmation of the booking is due. For boarders, their Housemistresses can sign in ‘loco parentis’.
Once this deadline has arrived and the tickets are confirmed and paid for, if your daughter’s name is still on the list (even if she is late with her consent slip) it is assumed she is still intending to join us on the trip. If after this time she is suddenly unable to go she should let me know immediately as I may have a list of reserves. Failing this, she will need to try to find a replacement herself if you are to avoid being charged. What she must not do is cross her name off the list on finding she can no longer go without seeing me in person.
I urge you to encourage your daughter to take advantage of all these opportunities that are presented. I have been so delighted to witness girls (for example) talking excitedly about a painting or sculpture, hardly believing that this is the actual thing which they’ve only ever seen in books until now! It is also gratifying to hear of former St Catherine’s girls regularly visiting the opera with their friends as a result of their Culture Vultures experiences!
Trips taken so far this academic year:
‘War Horse’ at the National Theatre
‘Blood Brothers’ at the New Victoria Theatre, Woking
British Museum’s remarkable exhibition, ‘The First Emperor: China’s Terracotta Army’
