Music
Many congratulations to all the girls who took part in the Senior Summer Concert on the 13th May. It was such a successful event, & I was extremely proud of all of you who took part – thank you for making it such a high-achieving, but also fun, occasion! Many groups took part including the Brass and Harp Ensembles, the Jazz Band, Senior Choir, Senior Chamber Choir, Camerata, Cantores, the Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, Consort 1 and the four U6 soloists. Particular congratulations must go to Peggy Fooks for her musical and thrilling performance of her concerto movement. The audience also greatly enjoyed a moving farewell performance by the U6 Singers, providing a fitting occasion for all of us to pay tribute to the many fine musicians in the U6 who will sadly be leaving us at the end of this term. May I re-iterate the grateful thanks that I, on behalf of the whole Music Department, gave them at the end of the concert for all the pleasure that they have given to so many people through their music-making during their time at St Catherine’s. I hope most sincerely that they will all continue to enjoy the pleasure of making music for the rest of their lives.

Last week saw the last Informal Concert of the year where we were treated to 17 confident and musical performances. Starting with a cello octet version of Take Five, the programme encompassed a wide range of musical styles before finishing with a flamboyant version of Chatanooga Choo Choo by Harriet Ellison on trombone.Thank you, and very well done, to everyone who took part in this extremely successful event.

The musical year is now drawing to a close, but there are still a number of events to come. If you’re not in a rush to go home at the end of today then please come and join us in the Dining Hall at 7.30 for our third dedicated Rock Concert. Now firmly established in the musical year at St Catherine’s, this is an occasion where the informal rules, giving you a chance to either sit or stand to enjoy the music or to boogie the night away – it’s your choice! Be cool, dress down, and get in the mood for Half Term in the company of Ian Young and the school’s cooler musos…

In the second half of the Summer Term the highlight will undoubtedly be the Middle School Summer Concert on Friday 25th June. This will take place in the Dining Hall at 7.30pm and will include a variety of ensembles and soloists from the Fourth Forms. The Middle School Summer Concert will also provide an important final rehearsal/performance opportunity for all the girls in the Middle School Choirs who have their Recording Session for the Anniversary CD on the following Sunday (27th). Just to remind you, the timetable for the morning is as follows:

U3 Choir                                10 am – 10.45 am
Micdle Cantores                    11 am – 11.45 am
Middle Chamber Choir        11.45 am – 12.30 pm
Fourth Form Choir              12.30 pm – 1.15 pm

All girls who are members of these choirs will be needed during these times to make sure that they can create a performance of such sizzling musicianship & excitement that you will all want to buy the CD next term and play it non-stop over Christmas!

Finally this term there will be a Recital by the Music Scholars and Senior Award Holders during the afternoon of Speech Day on Saturday 10th July.

Many thanks to those girls who have applied for the 14+ and 16+ Music Awards; the auditions are on Saturday 19th June, and you will receive a letter very shortly informing you of the time of your audition. For all those taking the Grade V Theory exam this term please remember that the exam is also on Saturday 19th June at 10.00am in school.

In conclusion, may I wish you all a very happy Half Term from the Music Department. Keep practising as an alternative to all that revision, and lessons will resume again on Monday 14th June after Exam Week.
