Design and Technology
Exam Board: AQA 4562

60% Controlled Assessment  40% Examination (1 paper)
Length of Examination: 2 hours

This two year course gives pupils the opportunity to develop their individual Design and Technology skills to a high standard. A major project contributes 60% of the GCSE grade. In general terms the project can be carried out using a variety of materials including, but by no means limited to, wood, metal, plastics and electronics.

COMMON CORE

The Common Core of the syllabus is examined with a two hour written paper consisting of the following topic headings:

Products and applications:- Candidates should learn the workings and functions of a wide range of products and their applications related to design, manufacture, materials and their markets.

Quality and Quality Control:- Candidates should learn to distinguish between quality of design, fitness for purpose and appearance, quality of manufacture, and how to achieve and maintain quality during production.

Information Technology:- Understand and utilise Information Technology throughout the course and understand the impact and effect that it is having in the world of design. The department now has excellent facilities for both CAD and CAM.

Health and Safety:- Candidates should develop a knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety as designers, consumers and producers.

Materials and Components:- Candidates will study in detail the materials that they will use during their major project. This will involve researching the source, structure and uses of a range of materials.

AREA OF FOCUS
Candidates will sit a two hour written paper on a subject pre-released in the Spring Term. They will be expected to explore an area relating to some aspect of designing and manufacturing. For instance, the subjects could concern the relationship between client and manufacturer, the use of prototypes and the use of computer technology in the design process.

CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT (DESIGN PROJECT)

Candidates will be expected to produce a design folder to support their practical work. It is expected that the project will result in a very high quality project being manufactured. This will display the candidates’ ability to design and make a professional artefact of their choice. CAD and CAM will be used as an integral part of their project and will provide a ‘hands-on’ demonstration of how these computer technologies are now deeply embedded into many aspects of business and commercial life.
