The world in which we live is likely to change more in the next 50 years than it has ever done before. Geography explains these changes and prepares people for them. It is a subject about now and the future. Geographers have a unique viewpoint combining political and economic aspects with an understanding of physical process. Geography develops the ability to combine scientific principals with economic awareness, environmental concern and an appreciation and tolerance of peoples’ values and attitudes.

Geographers are trained to be good decision makers who look at all aspects of a situation and have a huge range of skills such as:
• Data collection and analytical skills (including statistical)
• Presentation of data cartographically, graphically and diagrammatically.
• Concise report or essay writing
• Research skills
• ICT and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
• Application of knowledge to unknown situations.
• Preparing and giving presentations
• Working as a team
• Think independently and be able to solve problems
• Make informed geographical decisions

The course comprises of four main sections:

1. Unit 1 Dynamic Planet (25%)
Restless Earth

Water World
Coastal Change
Conflict and Oceans on the Edge.

2. Unit 2 People and the Planet (25%)
Population Dynamics
Consuming Resources

World of Work.

3. Unit 3 Making Geographical Decisions (25%)
The theme is released two years in advance of the examination. Resource material is pre-released and is studied in class beforehand.

4. Unit 4 Researching Geography (25%)
A fieldwork report written up in controlled conditions.

One piece of work is produced involving the collection and analysis of data. Task is provided by Edexcel. There is a compulsory fieldtrip to Dorset for three days in June 2009. The girls gain a huge amount from residential field studies, including team work, data collection skills, as well as the luxury of applying theory to real life examples. There will be an added cost to the bill and every effort will be made to keep these costs to a minimum.

No two Geography lessons are ever the same, they are lively, fun and interesting. For example you may present a report at a public enquiry on managed retreat, give a TV news broadcast on the issues arising from the redevelopment of the Lower Lea Valley London Olympic site, find the best site to locate a wind farm, use Google earth to make decisions on where to set up an eco-tourist resort in Sri Lanka and have a debate on the viability of nuclear power.

Geography is a highly respected and academically rigorous subject, which helps to prepare students for a wide range of careers. The skills that are gained through the study of Geography provides the key to a wide choice of careers such as law, medicine, finance, urban or environmental planning, community development, journalism, climatology, researcher, architecture, hazard management, marketing and many more.
