Edexcel 1426 60% Coursework (30% Performance, 30% Composition) 40% Examination
Length of Examination: 1 hour 30 minutes
What is GCSE Music all about?
GCSE Music is about making and listening to music. It covers performing, composition and listening in a wide variety of musical styles, and there are opportunities to become more familiar with music technology too.
Will I enjoy this course?
Yes, if you already like:
• Listening to a wide variety of music from Baroque to contemporary styles and want to know the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of music
• Performing
• Composing or arranging
I’m interested - tell me more
Some of the types of music we study will be familiar, some will not: what is certainly true is that you will have a breadth of understanding and appreciation that will enrich your music-making for life.
You will become a proficient composer - and you don’t have to be Mozart to do well! Some people have tunes in their heads that they are just bursting to write down but most of us need to ‘craft’ a composition: we will show you how to do it. It’s a great feeling having other people playing music you have written!
For the performance, you will need to be around Grade 5 standard by the time you sit the exam. You don’t have to play a whole orchestra - one instrument at that level will be quite sufficient!
Classes are fun and varied - you’ll have a great time as well as learning a huge amount about the subject.
I’m thinking about the future - what useful skills will it give me?
GCSE Music gives you analytical and technical skills that you can easily transfer to other disciplines. It also shows that you have the interest and tenacity to develop your academic understanding of a ‘hobby’.
How will I be examined?
There are three areas that will be examined:
• Performance (30%)
• Composition (30%)
• Listening (40%)
Performance and composition are both coursework modules: you will need to submit three performances and two compositions. For the Listening Paper, you will listen to a CD and answer questions related to the music we will have studied during the course.
