document.write('On 24\<sup\>th\</sup\> February 2010, I travelled to the beautiful town of Bath Spa to attend an Eco-conference at Kingswood School who currently holds two international Green Flag Awards and has been addressing sustainable development for a number of years with support from their whole community. I chose to attend the meeting because I wanted to share our own successes and challenges with other Eco-schools in the U.K and to learn more ideas and initiatives on how St Catherine&rsquo;s can develop into a sustainable school as well as maintaining our prestigious Green Flag Eco-schools award.\<br /\>\n');

document.write('The keynote speaker was Mr Jonathon Porritt who is the Co-Founder of Forum for the Future, an eminent write, broadcaster and commentator on sustainable development. He received a CBE in January 2000 for services to environmental protection and has also been appointed by the Prime Minister in July 2000 as the Chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission. This is the Government&rsquo;s principal source of independent advice across the whole sustainable development agenda.&nbsp; He spoke with passion and enthusiasm on how important it is that schools take an active role in encouraging sustainable development within their curriculum work. He also emphasised the need to have a \<strong\>\<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"\>connection between action and learning \</span\>\</strong\>in order to achieve sustainability in schools. During the conference, I also heard a thought provoking presentation given by Professor Bill Scott from the University of Bath. He discussed some of the up to date thinking and policy development on sustainable schools and stressed that the role of learning is vital in achieving sustainable development. He believes that student participation is fundamental in changing attitudes and behaviour and that through students&rsquo; involvement in sustainable work, we are helping them to develop their critical thinking skills and leaving them better equipped to take their place in society as responsible and informed citizens. Finally, he also highlighted that the government believes that all schools should be considered sustainable by 2020.\<br /\>\n');

document.write('During lunch, I learnt from Kingswood&rsquo;s catering department how saving costs and buying locally with concern for environmental impact does not result in reduction in quality. At Kingswood, the catering team aims to source as much of their food supplies as locally as possible and the school also holds meat-free and organic days to promote their sustainability initiative. The lunch that I ate was delicious and it made me feel good that the food that I have consumed has not increased my own carbon footprint and that small actions can impact upon my own and others&rsquo; well-beings. During the afternoon, Kingswood&rsquo;s students, staff and members of their local community shared practical and innovative ideas through displays and small group discussions on tackling the challenges of a whole-school approach towards sustainability and their journey to becoming a sustainable school. I have learnt some inspiring examples and new initiatives of good practice including successful ways of tackling energy issues and reducing carbon emissions. I believe the key message from the conference is that in becoming a sustainable school it needs to be \<strong\>\<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"\>&lsquo;a way of thinking and a way of life!&rsquo;\<br /\>\n');

He discussed about the importance of global partnerships in combating climate change and how schools along with local authorities can play a vital role in pioneering carbon and waste reduction and the importance of educating children on environmental sustainability.\<br /\>\n');

document.write('During the conference we heard a number of presentations from EDF energy, the Environment Agency, Waste Watch and Keep Britain Tidy. The talks discussed ways in which schools and local authorities can work together and meet the Carbon Reduction Commitment set out by the government and how it can be achieved through enhanced energy efficiency. In particular, there was a case study on how one school that went from F (least energy efficient) to C (more energy efficient) on the Display Energy Certificate. Some of the strategies that the school used to help them to improve their energy performance were behaviour surveys of the students in order to understand the pattern of usage and for behaviour changes to be made; a short film on the projects and initiatives that they did to become greener and finally a &lsquo;Switch It Off&rsquo; campaign to show the saving that can be achieved when a lot of people turn off unwanted lights and electrical appliances that have been left on standby.\<br /\>\n');

document.write('Pupils at a School in Surrey have saved 12 acres of Peruvian rainforest from the chainsaw, making a significant impact on rainforest conservation, according to the charity Cool Earth. The area of rainforest sponsored with Cool Earth is now being protected in the name of St Catherine&rsquo;s School which they can view via Google Maps. By saving such a large amount of rainforest the children are keeping a staggering 3,120 tonnes of carbon where it belongs. That&rsquo;s the same amount of carbon dioxide that around 284 UK citizens emit in a year.\<br /\>\n');

Being a member of the Girls School Association (GSA), St Catherine&rsquo;s took part on the annual Girls Go Green event to promote a week long initiative for eco-awareness. An impressive range of eco-friendly activities occurred around the School in order to raise awareness of environmental issues and the importance of sustainable development. The week also marked the celebration of the Eco-Committee&rsquo;s hard work as St Catherine&rsquo;s has officially been awarded the very prestigious Green Flag Eco-schools status.\<br /\>\n');

All in all it was a very successful week and we managed to raise enough money to maintain 12 acres of Peruvian rainforest through &lsquo;Cool Earth&rsquo;, which was 2 acres over our target and so we should feel proud that our little bit of &lsquo;St Catherine&rsquo;s Peru&rsquo; will stay safe from deforestation and we have helped to keep carbon where it belongs! document.write('As the Summer Term approaches, the Eco-Committee has been hard at work planning and organising a variety of events to raise awareness on environmental issues and to sustain our prestigious Green Flag Eco-schools status. We will be delivering an assembly at the beginning of next term on energy efficiency and savings and we also have the painting of our street art panels which will work in collaboration with our Prep school Eco-team to complete the project. We plan to use the milk bottle tops and probiotic bottles that you have all been collecting to re-create the &lsquo;pledge tree&rsquo; and we will also create some 3D artwork based on the theme of sustainable development and carbon reductions.&nbsp;\<br /\>\n');
