Business Studies
Why Business Studies?
Current students said:
“It sounded really interesting because it’s about what is really happening now” “I know that, whatever I end up doing, parts of my BS course will be relevant and useful” ; “I think it will give me an advantage when I go to interviews and I can talk about how the business works and some of the problems they might have to solve” “I wanted to do something new and it sounded really relevant because one day I want to work for a large company”. If it works for them ………..
Will I enjoy it?
Yes - if you’ll be excited by a live and relevant subject.

What you learn is relevant to everything from small family businesses to multinationals - even hospitals and schools.

It is also relevant to you. How do you market a product, motivate people to get the best out of them, communicate and organise efficiently, plan for the unexpected, manage money? These are life skills you can use now and wherever you work in future.
Course Content
AS: Marketing; Accounting and Finance; People; Operations Management; External Influences; Objectives and Strategy - with two papers based on a Case Study that you can read and think about in advance.

A2: Exactly the same range of topics but going into more depth and using more business theories e.g. international competition, business ethics, takeovers, decision trees, contingency planning. So by now you can look at any organisation like a management consultant and see what it’s doing right, what’s going wrong and advise what it should do in the future. And we do look at real businesses - lots of them - often in the news and many you’ll know
Assessment
AS: 3 x 1 hour papers

A2: 3 x 1 hour 30 minutes papers.

• The figures are quite easy - it’s about knowing what do with them rather than advanced maths calculations.

• It’s not a soft option - yes, we know it had that reputation but business analysis and decision-making demand rigorous, logical thinking and universities know that now.

• Modern business practice involves aspects of Law, Psychology, Sociology and Accounting and combines with other subjects well. For example, back up an interest in Sport, Languages or Creative Arts with some business sense and you’ll be very employable. There are lots of business-related university courses too.
