Why Study History of Art?

You live and work in buildings; you are surrounded by paintings, sculpture and other works of art, studying them will enable you to understand their significance in a historical and social context. London is on your doorstep and a world centre for studying art.
It is acknowledged as an academic subject, complementing Modern Languages, History and Art. It leads to interesting careers in journalism, the media, galleries and salerooms

If you are curious about the world around you and love looking at art or you wish to become an artist or architect you should study History of Art.
You will discover that knowing about different styles of painting and architecture, the lives of patrons and artists will increase your enjoyment. When you visit exhibitions or buildings you will be pleasantly surprised at how much you know and understand.

Course Content
|
AS: It is the study of Western European art from about 600 BC until 2000 AD. You will study the techniques of painting and building and the analysis of style. The course is divided into topics, which are arranged to give you a chronological overview.
A2 There is an opportunity to study a subject or artist of your choice and develop your research skills. We also look at two major topics covering 17th Century Baroque art in Rome and 19th Century Victorian painting. These are studied in considerable depth.

Assessment
|
AS: 3 x 1 hour papers
A2: 2 x 2 hours papers
Coursework Requirements: a 3,000 word personal study on a subject of your choice.
