Key Skills: Communication and ICT

The Curriculum - Key Skills
|
To gain the level three qualification students must pass both the practical examination and complete their portfolio to the required standard.
Practical Examination
The practical examination lasts 90 minutes. The practical examination requires students to be familiar with Databases, Spreadsheets and Word Processing applications. Each examination is based on two of the above. The examination board supplies data files for use in the examination so that students have time to demonstrate the use of advanced techniques/functions rather than data entry.
Students at St Catherine’s sit the practical examination in the January of their lower sixth year.
Portfolio Work
The portfolio comprises two pieces of work (one minor, one major) that allow the student to demonstrate the use of ICT in a real life scenario. The portfolio must include the use of text, graphics, number and electronic communication. In the past students at St Catherine’s have used the following as part of their portfolio:
• Coursework from various AS and A2 courses including Geography, Psychology, Chemistry, Biology
• Revision presentations created in PowerPoint
• Investigations into universities carried out prior to completing UCAS forms
• Reports on work completed as part of the Young Enterprise Scheme
• Extended essays on the topic of learning to drive prepared for U5 students
The portfolio work is submitted in the June of the upper sixth year.
Key Skills results (pass/fail) are published alongside A2 results in August.
