Modern Languages
Why Study Modern Languages?
Modern Languages, in conjunction with a non-language subject, give girls a good awareness of the country concerned and tremendous assets which will stand them in good stead when they are looking for a job and making their way in the world of work, as the labour market is rapidly becoming internationalised.
Studying Modern Languages gives you the confidence and ability to not only discuss current affairs but actually understand them! It is a well respected academic subject at universities. It is a valued asset that can distinguish you from another candidate in a job selection interview. The course is for everyone, not just for those who are aspiring to a career as a professional linguist.

Will I enjoy it?
Today Languages students are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of topics which appeal to all interests, whether it be more on social, political or economic themes with the accompaniment to the core language work. You will find that the variety fosters mental agility. The emphasis throughout is on the acquisition of practical language skills and the lessons give you plenty of opportunity to practise your speaking and listening skills. Not only are the lessons enjoyable but you will also be able to participate in a variety of overseas courses and project, such as The ‘Projecto Ambiental’ in Tenerife and the ‘Your Future in Europe’ conference in Paris.

Tell me more…
• You will learn A LOT, especially in the first year! We assume everyone who embarks upon Modern Languages comes with a desire to learn and explore the culture and the literature of the country. However, don’t worry! Literature books are not required for the examination.
• Employers are frequently attracted by foreign language specialists not only because of their all-round communication skills but also because of their mental agility ("they are good at thinking on their feet").
• Most of the grammar has been already covered during the GCSE course.
• We do advise you to spend some time during your holidays abroad.
• By the end of your course you will have acquired skills that will enrich not only your foreign holidays but also the rest of your life.
