Why Study Music?
|
Studying Music gives you the ability to express yourself through different media, as both an academic and creative musician. You will develop your performance and compositional skills, as well as developing a more informed understanding of how and why music was written and performed. It is a well respected academic subject, combining well with other Arts and Humanity A Levels, as well as Sciences.

Will I enjoy it?
|
If you are already of a good performance standard and enjoy engaging with music in all its forms, then you should seriously consider studying Music. It is a diverse course where you will hone a wide range of skills, including studying music in its wider cultural perspective, as well as giving you a new perspective on your music-making.

Course Content
|
AS: This is a broad-based course, providing the foundations for study at A2. The main areas of study are: stylistic compositional techniques (Bach Chorales and Baroque Counterpoint); aural skills; analysis of set pieces (Anthology); composition; performance.
A2: This course develops skills acquired during AS; you will choose your specialist area in compositional techniques, and choose either the performance or composition route for your coursework portfolio; you will study more challenging pieces from the Anthology, and continue to develop your aural and contextual understanding.

|
AS: 1 x 45 minutes listening paper; 1 x 1 hour 30 minutes Anthology paper
Coursework: Compositional techniques and composition; performance (recital and performing during the course)
A2: 1 x 1 hour listening paper; 1 x 2 hours Anthology paper; 1 x 3 hour compositional techniques paper
Coursework: Performance (recital and performing during the course) or composition portfolio
