Share ideas and opinions on topical issues...
|
Discussion evenings are an excellent opportunity to share ideas and opinions about various topical issues in an informal setting, with nibbles and a glass of wine provided! They’re held once a term and involve a group of girls and staff. The topics are selected in advance by a vote, so there’s lots of time to prepare. However, there’s no need for extensive research, as the discussion begins with two volunteers giving short presentations, one for the motion, the other against.
Once the discussion is underway, everybody is free to chip in, and there is always a wide range of opinions to be heard. Recent subjects have included: tax bailouts for banks during the current economic crisis, the upper time limit for abortion, the ethics of obesity, and the death penalty. Such controversial topics can lead to heated (but friendly!) debate, and they give sixth formers a chance to express and justify their views, as well as exploring those of others. They make for a very enjoyable evening, and always leave you with plenty to think about!
