Celebrating Influential Women

In the Spring of 2021 St Catherine’s opened the The 6, a new space dedicated to the Sixth Form for day girls and boarders.  The 6 offers the girls a spacious, vibrant Common Room and modern boarding accommodation.

In 2019 the School invited the girls, alumnae and staff to propose women who they believed had made a significant contribution to our history for whom the bedrooms would be named.  We are delighted on opening The 6 to celebrate global representatives from the fields of science, the arts, civil rights, philanthropy and more.  We are also delighted to be honouring 9 alumnae including actor Juliet Stevenson, aeronautics Professor Beverley McKeon Reynolds, yachtswoman Nikki Henderson, war correspondent Anne Garrels and neurosurgeon, Professor Carys Bannister.  They take their places alongside Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Tu YouYou, Michelle Obama, Carol Ann Duffy, Wangari Maathai, Lady Hale, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Dame Stephanie Shirley and many more accomplished women.  We hope that generations of girls will be enthused and inspired by the stories of the women for whom their rooms are named.

In each room hangs a framed biography of the woman it honours and includes a ‘Talking Point’ encouraging the girls to consider each woman’s influence in the context of her times, her contribution and her character.

Below you can search all the inspirational women we have chosen to celebrate in The 6.  We are confident St Cat’s girls will pass through The 6 and become influential women themselves, making their own positive contribution to our world.
