Overview
Academic life at St Catherine's Prep is purposeful and exciting, with a strong focus on academic progress and achievement. In a stimulating and nurturing environment, confident girls are confident learners. Teachers build and nurture each individual's talents and skills, while helping her to understand that mistakes are an essential part of the learning process.
Here are some of the ways in which St Catherine's Prep creates a stimulating and nurturing environment for its students:
- The school has a diverse and inclusive community that celebrates the unique talents and perspectives of all students.
- The school's curriculum is rigorous and challenging, but it is also designed to be engaging and to promote collaboration and problem solving.
- The school's teachers are passionate about education and committed to helping each student reach their full potential.
- The school provides a variety of opportunities for students to explore their interests and talents both inside and outside of the classroom.
- The specialist teachers have access to top-class facilities, such as the Prep School’s Wonderlab for Science, Soundscape for Music and Imaginarium for cookery and DT lessons.
As a result of these factors, St Catherine's Prep creates a stimulating and nurturing environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
EYFS (Pre-School and Reception)
The Early Years celebrate the start of School life at St Catherine’s. Our main objective during this time at school is for girls to feel secure, happy and settled. Our Pre-School class is for girls aged 3 to 4 years old and then they progress to Pre-Prep I (Reception).
The Pre-School and Reception curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework with activities to promote the prime areas of learning:
- Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development and the specific areas of learning::
- Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design.
Art, Crafts, Music, Ballet and Drama are developed through the Expressive Arts and Design area of the curriculum.
In Pre-School, girls achieve many milestones and continue to meet the early learning goals as they move on up through Pre-Prep I (Reception). Child-initiated activities are an integral part of each day alongside important teaching of phonics, literacy and numeracy skills. There is a strong emphasis on having fun whilst learning which gives the girls confidence and encourages independence.

Pre-Prep II & III (Yrs 1 & 2)
These year groups continue to build on the solid foundations laid down in Pre-Prep I. The girls are encouraged during these years to become increasingly independent. The happy, secure and inspiring classrooms in Trinity Court provide the girls with the confidence to tackle new challenges and to develop their emerging skills in reading, writing and maths.
In Pre-Prep III all girls start to learn the violin or cello in our string scheme. Ballet, Tap, Modern Dance and Chess are offered as after school activities.
Girls are introduced to a small selection of other optional clubs, including gardening and cookery.
Prep Form I - LIII (Yrs 3 - 6)
Girls from Form 1 to Lower III remain in form-based teaching groups and from Lower II are in allocated teaching sets or smaller groups for Maths and some English lessons. Specialist teachers deliver Art, Computing, Design Engineering, Drama, French, Music and PE. Girls in Lower III are also taught RS by our School Chaplain and Latin by a Senior School Classics teacher.
The Curriculum includes:

We are proud to be a De Bono Thinking School and promote independent thought and creative approaches to teaching and learning. Girls have a weekly Thinking Skills lesson which includes an introduction to De Bono's Thinking Hats. Through our Thinking Skills programme, other learning strategies are introduced such as motivation, revision and examination technique. Girls in UII and LIII have individual iPads which provide extended learning opportunities.
In addition, there is a wide and varied extra-curricular programme which enables the girls to engage in many different pursuits. Using their creativity and ingenuity, girls often create and lead their own clubs.
Our aim is for girls to leave the Prep School as confident, thinking young ladies ready to take advantage of all of the opportunities available in their next phase of education. Girls leave the Prep School to take up Senior School places at a number of excellent schools. We are very proud of their achievements.

Specialist Teachers
Specialist Teacher Profiles
From the age of 3 (EYFS) the girls benefit from specialist teachers in Computing, Music, Ballet and PE. This ensures that students have access to the highest quality instruction in these subjects from a very young age and the teachers get to know the girls year on year.
Click on the images below to learn more about our specialist teachers.
Creative Arts
There are many opportunities for the girls to participate in the Creative Arts which are an important part of their education at this age and stage. Ballet is taught as part of the Pre-Prep curriculum and girls have an excellent musical education taught by specialist music teachers from Pre-School. Dance, drama and music are vibrant within the school and there are regular chances for the girls to perform both informally to their peers and within more formal setting in our outstanding Auditorium.
Art
In Art, girls have the opportunity to work with a variety of different media in our inspirational Imaginarium.
Girls develop their techniques with creativity, experimentation and different kinds of art and design. They are taught to create sketch books to record their observations and improve their art and design practice, including drawing, painting and sculpture using a range of materials. They are also introduced to artists and designers to underpin their thoughts and ideas for their own artwork.
We also run two weekly Art clubs where students have the chance to work in small groups and create a variety of projects in addition to the curriculum.
Dance
Girls in Pre-Prep are taught Ballet as part of their curriculum. The curricular classes take place during the school day and aim to teach basic ballet technique and an awareness of the body and different ways of moving. Through imaginative, themed sessions, exploring fairy tales, classical ballet stories and links to school topics the dance classes will help the girls to harness skills in co-ordination, build their confidence and develop a greater understanding of working with others.
For students in PPII (Year 1) upwards ballet, Modern, Tap and Jazz dance classes are offered as an extra curricular activity taking place after school.

Design and Technology
Drama
Drama is taught both as a discrete subject and as an important part of the English curriculum. As well as being great fun, taking part in drama develops the girls’ confidence, imagination and physical co-ordination, as well as their speaking and listening skills.
Girls have frequent opportunities to speak in front of an audience including assemblies, Harvest and Christmas celebrations and presentations to a group or class. LAMDA classes are offered to the older girls as an extra-curricular activity. Our two major public performances, the Pre-Prep Nativity and the end of LIII musical are always a delight and eagerly awaited by the school community and beyond.
The girls exude confidence, demonstrate great teamwork and perform with a maturity way beyond their years to create the most outstanding productions. We are very fortunate to be able to stage these events in the new, purpose built Anniversary Hall Theatre

Music
Here at St Catherine’s, all girls are encouraged to foster a life-long passion for music, and it is taught as a specialist subject to each class from their very first week to their last.
- Singing and percussion instruments are introduced in Pre-Prep
- The String Scheme is introduced from PPIII (Year 2) where girls have the opportunity to try 3 instruments including the Violin, Viola and Cello.
- In Form 1(Year 3) woodwind and brass instruments are introduced
- Ukuleles are introduced in LII (Year 4)
- Music Technology in UII (Year 5)
- In LIII (Year 6) the girls have numerous opportunities to perform in school and at local community events.
Each class has at least one hour of Music tuition each week with a fully qualified specialist teacher. In the dedicated Soundscape Music studio, rhythm is introduced using drums, percussion, chime-bars and melodic boom-whackers.
Each girl’s musical achievements are celebrated through ensembles, concerts and solo events. Girls have the opportunity to perform in the Prep School Hall, in the Senior School 300-seater Auditorium and also at local music festivals and local community events. These opportunities are designed to encourage self-belief and build confidence from a young age.
Individual Music Lessons
Individual music lessons are available to girls from Form I upwards upon application. We have over thirty visiting instrumental teachers teaching a broad range of instruments, including piano and singing; the Director of Prep Music is always available to give advice on the taking up of instruments.
Girls in Pre-Prep are given a trial lesson with the Head of the relevant instrumental section to encourage their passion and ascertain their current level. Individual music lessons in Pre-Prep only start after approval is given by the Director of Prep Music and the Head of Pre-Prep.
Cookery
Cookery is extremely popular at St. Catherine's, and our cookery curriculum begins in Form I (Year 3), offering our pupils invaluable skills in food preparation, safety, and culinary techniques. We deliver many of our lessons in the modern Culinary Art Studio within the Senior School Art and Maker Space, which provides a wonderful environment for learning, with the remainder of lessons taking place in our well-equipped Prep School Imaginarium.
Our cookery program currently includes:
Cooking Fundamentals
Starting in Year 3, your daughter will learn essential skills such as preparing fruits and vegetables, measuring ingredients, and understanding food hygiene and safety. These foundational lessons pave the way for confident and safe cooking practices.
Nutritional Education and Seasonal Cooking
We emphasize the importance of a balanced diet and teach about the nutritional value of different foods. Your daughter will also explore seasonal fruits and vegetables, gaining insights into the benefits of local produce and seasonal eating habits.
Farm to Fork Insight
This part of our curriculum educates pupils about the journey of food from the farm to their plates. They participate in practical activities like tasting and evaluating different foods, which helps them understand food sourcing and encourages healthy eating.
Adopt a Chef Workshops
Led by the head chef from Harrison’s, Dan Marinier, this unique program includes three specialised workshops. These sessions provide an intimate look at professional culinary techniques and aim to inspire a deeper appreciation and engagement with the culinary arts.
Extracurricular Clubs
In addition to the regular curriculum, younger pupils in Pre-Prep can join the 'Cookery Club,' where they engage in fun, basic cooking activities. For pupils in Key Stage 2, we offer the 'Make, Bake and Create' club, which allows them to explore other recipes and creative projects.
Our cookery program is designed to not just impart practical cooking skills but also to cultivate a lifelong appreciation for food and its preparation. We take pride in seeing our pupils develop not only competence but also confidence in the kitchen, setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy and enjoyable cooking.
Digital Learning
The Digital Dynamos ICT curriculum supports students in becoming independent, critical thinkers helping them engage safely with the online world and launching them on a lifelong digital learning path.
We aim to provide varied experiences enabling the girls to become confident in applying their digital skills to access, understand and create digital content; collaborate and share with others and become adaptable and flexible in their thinking so that they are able to transfer those skills from one tool or platform to another. From Coding Fundamentals to Google Workplace Skills, Young Coder competitions to Stop Animation and Robotics, our girls become Digital Dynamos learning the necessary skills required to live and thrive in a world of digital innovation. Conscious, continual development of cross-curricular teaching ensure that Computing/ICT is not seen as a stand-alone subject but informs approaches to lessons varied as French, Science and Music.
Physical Education
At St. Catherine's Prep School, we champion a strong foundation in physical education to promote the holistic development of our pupils. Our program is designed to instil a lifelong love for sports and physical activity, while equipping pupils with essential skills across a variety of sports.
Pre-Prep PE
Starting in Pre-Prep, we focus on fundamental movement skills like running, jumping, and throwing, which are the building blocks for all sports. Through fun, engaging activities, pupils develop coordination and balance, progressing to small-sided games that foster teamwork and sportsmanship. The girls begin their swimming journey in the Pre-Prep and enjoy weekly swimming lessons in our indoor pool, which continue throughout their time at Prep.
Prep PE
As pupils advance, they enjoy a diverse range of sports including netball, football, lacrosse, cricket, gymnastics, dance, swimming, and athletics. Our commitment to nurturing well-rounded girls extends to embracing the spirit of competition as a means to encourage personal development and foster a love for learning and sportsmanship.
Competition
We believe in the power of healthy competition to motivate and inspire. It teaches our pupils to strive for excellence with integrity and enhances self-esteem. Competitive activities help our girls to identify their strengths and areas for improvement, building key life skills like persistence and resilience.
At St. Catherine’s, our goal is not just to excel in sports but to cultivate well-rounded individuals who appreciate the value of teamwork and lifelong physical fitness.
Library
The Prep School Library provides a bright, comfortable and cosy place for girls to browse, read and research. The library is generally open from 9:15 am – 2.45pm Monday through Friday during term time and is well stocked with over 8,000 fiction and non-fiction titles, as well as a collection of newspapers and magazines aimed specifically at children. The Library is managed by a librarian, who is supported by an enthusiastic group of parent volunteers, the Bibliocats.
Every form has a regularly scheduled period to visit the Library each week to exchange books, research and work on prep or simply enjoy quiet reading time. In addition the girls are encouraged to visit the Library during morning break and lunch break. All girls are expected to observe the published Library Code of Conduct when visiting the Library.
The Librarian and the Bibliocats, working with members of staff, organise a range of activities which stimulate the girls’ natural interest in stories, help them learn more about their world and support curriculum based topics. These activities include author visits, Librarians' Literary Lectures (found here on the main school library page), storytelling sessions, quizzes, book reviews, lunchtime book clubs and periodic book fairs. Each year group work has different reading challenges that they are encouraged to complete.

Surrey Wildlife Trust Partnership
Surrey Wildlife Trust Partnership
St Catherine’s have joined the Surrey Wildlife Trust’s Wilder Schools Project with the aim of increasing biodiversity in the schools grounds and at home to battle the decline in nature in the UK. Since starting, FI (Year 3) have been leading the biodiversity project by surveying the school grounds and assessing potential gaps to help encourage more wildlife. The girls have raised awareness of the project through creating posters and presenting these in assembly and have also created a plan outlining how they will raise funds to create some of the habitats. So far ‘no mow’ spaces have been created and the ‘blue heart’ competition has been launched while also forming log circles for lessons outside and a place for invertebrates to call home. There are still lots to come, including creating a pond in the Cottage Garden and planting a hedgerow in the Senior School.

Educational Visits
Educational trips provide our girls with an opportunity to learn and grow in ways that are not possible in the traditional classroom setting. They can develop perseverance and resilience through working both independently and as part of a team.
Our girls have recently benefited from a variety of day trips, including:
- Butser Ancient Farm, where they experienced what life was like for people in the Iron Age.
- Dell Quay, where they explored the tidal marshes and learned about the local wildlife.
- Hampton Court Palace, where they toured the royal apartments and gardens and learned about life in Tudor times.
- Sayers Croft, where they got hands-on experience with farming and gardening.
Residential trips:
From FI (Year 3) upwards, we offer an annual residential trip to all of our girls. These trips start with one night away and gradually increase in length until our girls reach L3 (Year 6) and are away for a week.
Here is an example of the residential trips we offer throughout the Prep school:
- FI (Year 3): One-night bushcraft focused trip to Holmbury St Mary
- LII (Year 4): Two-night Roman themed trip to Hooke Court, Dorset
- UII (Year 5): Three-night outdoor pursuit trip at PGL, Isle of Wight
- LIII (Year 6): One-week language and culture immersion trip to Normandy, France
All trips are included in the school fees. This means that our girls can experience all of the benefits of learning outside the classroom without any additional cost to their families.
We believe that these trips and activities are an essential part of a well-rounded education and they provide our girls with a valuable opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and to experience new things. They also help them to develop their problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills in stimulating ways. We are proud to offer these opportunities to all of our girls, and we believe that they are a valuable investment in their future.
